NATURAL HERBS, MINERALS AND SUBSTANCES

1) Aam, Mango 

Increases the amount of blood in the body. It contains a lot of Vitamins A and C. When unripe,
the fruit protects men from the effects of hot, scorching winds. Keri (the unripe fruit) is 
cooked in hot ashes and the pith mixed with water and sugar. The drink so obtained is a specific for heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

2) Adrak, Ginger 

Used extensively as a spice. the root of the plant is used; known for its quality of helping digestion; increases appetite and reduces the flatulence resulting from certain foods increases natural body heat if taken with jaggery in winter; beneficial in disorders connected with the formation of phlegm in the respiratory tract.



3) Ajwain, Caraway Seeds 

Used as a spice for vegetable dishes and other foods which tend to produce flatulence; pungent in taste and having a small seed with a strong smell, it is of particular help in disorders of the liver, stomach and the intestines.



4) Amla, Emblic Myroalan 

One of the cheapest source of Vitamin C which is not destroyed by boiling or other processes. Panacea for many ills of the body and mind, from anxiety and melancholia to falling and premature greying of hair.


5) Anar, Pomegranate

A delecious juicy fruit with many medicinal properties. Syrup allays uncontrollable thirst in diarrhoea; unripe fruit when it is used in many digestive powders.


6) Anda, (Egg of hen).

Is recommended in deficiency diseases. A main source of protein, it has an aphrodisiac effect if taken with juice of onion and honey. White of egg relieves pain of burns; dissolved in water it is recommended for infantile diarrhoea and dysentery.


7) Anjir, Fig 

A sweet delicious fruit. A nutritious and blood forming fruit, a few figs taken after meals act as a laxative; also good for cough and works as an expectorant.


8) Babool, or Kikar 

A large tree with thorns on it branches; twigs used as tooth brush; tender leaves of the tree help relieve diarrhoea.


9) Bel, Wood Apple 

The pulp (called Belgiri). Is used in most diseases of the intestines and liver; a specific for dysentery; pulp mixed with water forms a refreshing drink which offsets the effects of heat exhaustion.



10) Dhania, Coriander 

An ingredient used in recipes curries it is a cooling agent. Paste of coriander seeds ground in water and applied to the forehead relieves headache.



11) Gajar, Carrot 

The tuber is eaten raw or cooked; also made into halwa (pudding). Besides sugar, starch, iron, calcium and phosphorous, it contains appreciable amounts of Vitamins A, B and C. Carrot  has many other medicinal uses, particularly for deficiency diseases like night blindness.



12) Gul Banafsha, Violet flowers 

It is effective in fevers, catarrh,  pneumonia and cough. A paste of flowers applied to the forehead also relieves headache.



13) Haldi, Turmeric 

One essential ingredients of spices used in cooking. It adds not only colour, but also helps prevent flatulence. It is used mostly to cure injuries wounds and boils.


14) Heeng, Asafoetida 

Is yellow in colour with a pungent smell; used in several diseases of the stomach. One of the best remedies for flatuence, it is most  important digestive ingredient.


15) Imli, Tamarind 

Tasting sweet-sour. Used extensively in cooking. Its alkaline properties counteract hyperacidity, bilious fevers, nausea and thirst. It also acts as an appetiser.


16) Isabgol (plantago Ispagula).

The husk is used extensively for curing constipation and dysentery, also useful in cough and asthma.


17) Jamun, Jambalum 

Fruit of a large tree, it has excellent medicinal properties against diabetes because of its effect on the pancreas.


18) Kalonji, Small Fennel or Nigella 

Seed resembling onion seeds, extensively used in pickles. Kalonji is carminative and destroys harmful intestinal parasites.


19) Kattha, Catechu 

The dried juice of Kher tree; an essential ingredient of betel leaf Paan, constipative agent which stops dysentery too. A good remedy for dry cough when taken with turmeric and sugar candy.


20) Khas Khas, Poppy Seeds.

They are found in poppy heads and are used in many prescriptions for tonics.


21) Lahsan, Garlic 

Used as a spice for curries along with onions and ginger; pungent in taste, it has been used for centuries for dealing with flatulence. It deals with unpleasant smell of fish, lowers the blood pressure. It is used in medicines prescribed for diseases of the lungs and the respiratory tract.


22) Methi, Fenugreek 

Its medicinal uses include disorders like cough, asthma and rheumatism. Powder of fenugreek seeds helps constipation.

23) Mulethi, Liquorice 

Root of a creeper used as medicine. It helps deal with cough because of its expectorant quality. Relieves burning sensation while passing urine.


24) Muli, Radish 

Eaten raw with salt it helps digestion because of its carminative effect; an excellent diuretic. 
It helps in cases of stones in the gall bladder and the kidneys.

25) Multani Mitti

Soaked in water overnight and the supernatant water drunk in the morning relieves bleeding from the nose.


26) Neem, Margosa Tree 

The twigs of the tree are used for cleaning teeth. crushed leaves made into a ball and applied on boils remove the pus; decoction of leaves used to clean wounds and boils. All parts of the tree are endowed with the quality of purifying blood; oil of kernel fruit also used as an antiseptic.


27) Nimbu, Lemon  

Extremely rich in vitamin C; juice of lemon added to salads; an excellent appetiser it has a beneficial effect on the stomach.


28) Pyaz, Onion 

The bulb of the plant is an essential ingredient of all curries, has many medicinal qualities; an excellent medicine for cholera and diarrhoea if steeped in vinegar. Juice of onion taken  with honey is an excellent tonic.


29) Podina, Mint 

A spreading aromatic herb it is extensively used in Indian cooking. It is an ingredient of most prescriptions for stomach ailments because of its digestive properties.


30) Rai, Brown Mustard 

Mustard powder taken with meals hastens the process of digestion and increases appetite.


31) Saunf, Anise 

Seed of a plant with excellent carminative qualities and a diuretic, it also expels wind from the stomach.


32) Shahad, Honey 

Is extensively used for preparing linctus in the indigenous systems of medicine. A perfect food if taken with milk.


33) Sonth, Dried Ginger 

It helps digestion, expels wind from the intestines and is effective in rheumatism and lumbago.


34) Til, Sesame 

Bed wetting by children is effectively controlled by giving them sweets made of sesame seeds.


35) Tulsi, the Holy Basil 

The plant considered sacred and grown in flower pots by the Hindus; its leaves drive mosquitoes away. A useful remedy for cough and fever. Taken with pepper in an infusion, it is a very good effective in malaria.


36) Zeera, cumin Seeds 

An essential ingredient of Indian spices, it is known for its carminative effect. It also relieves nausea and vomiting in pregnant mothers.
